Rays’ Ace Shane McClanahan Exits Spring Training Start with Triceps Tightness

A worrying issue for the Tampa Bay Rays is that on March 22, 2025, ace pitcher Shane McClanahan exited his final spring training start against the Boston Red Sox because of an unease in his left triceps, which casts doubt on his availability for the start of the season.

Incident Details

When McClanahan felt uneasy after throwing a pitch to Red Sox prospect Kristian Campbell in the top of the third inning, he motioned to the dugout and left the game.

Before leaving, McClanahan had pitched 2 1/3 innings, giving up one hit and one walk and striking out three batters.

Medical Evaluation

The Rays identified that McClanahan has stiffness in his left triceps.  On March 23, imaging tests are planned to determine the extent of the injuries.

Notably, his prior elbow surgery is not thought to be connected to this problem.

Impact on Opening Day

As a key member of the Rays’ pitching staff, McClanahan was scheduled to start on Opening Day against the Colorado Rockies on March 28. His absence would be a major blow to the team.

McClanahan’s Career and Recent Performance

With a 3.02 ERA and 456 strikeouts in 404 2/3 innings, McClanahan has a 33-16 record across his three big league seasons.

Prior to the injury, he had tossed 4 2/3 shutout innings with five strikeouts and one walk this spring.

Looking Ahead

The Rays and its supporters are now awaiting the outcome of McClanahan’s medical exams, since his health is critical to the team’s hopes for the coming season and a prolonged absence may require them to make changes to their rotation of pitchers.
