Late Change to Usyk vs. Fury Undercard: Ishmael Davis Steps In

The highly anticipated Oleksandr Usyk vs. Tyson Fury rematch is just weeks away, set to take place on December 21 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. While the main event promises to deliver a blockbuster showdown between two heavyweight titans, a last-minute shakeup to the undercard has stirred excitement and intrigue among fans.

Israil Madrimov Forced to Withdraw

Initially, the co-main event was set to feature Israil Madrimov against Serhii Bohachuk, a fight that was expected to be a thrilling matchup. However, the plans were derailed after Madrimov was diagnosed with acute bronchitis, leaving him unable to compete.

Saudi boxing chief Turki Alalshikh confirmed the news on social media, stating:
“It was confirmed by doctors this evening that Israil Madrimov is suffering from acute bronchitis and has to withdraw from the Dec 21 fight with Bohachuk. British fighter Ishmael Davis will replace Madrimov.”

Madrimov, a former world champion, will now focus on recovering in time for his rescheduled clash against unbeaten WBC interim super-welterweight champion Vergil Ortiz on February 22, 2024.

Ishmael Davis Steps Up

In Madrimov’s absence, Ishmael Davis has been selected to take on Serhii Bohachuk in what promises to be a compelling co-main event. Davis is no stranger to stepping up on short notice, having fought Josh Kelly in September with just one week to prepare.

This time, Davis has slightly more preparation time—two weeks—but the challenge remains formidable. Bohachuk, known for his aggressive style, will provide a stern test for the British fighter. Despite the odds, Davis is embracing the opportunity, with Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn expressing his admiration for the fighter’s resilience and readiness.

“Ishmael Davis, in two months, has made a fortune, and I couldn’t be happier for him,” Hearn said.

Eddie Hearn Clears the Air

Acknowledging the rumors and conspiracy theories surrounding the change, Hearn emphasized that Madrimov’s withdrawal was strictly due to health concerns:
“He had acute bronchitis. He went to the hospital. He hasn’t been well. It was diagnosed. He wanted to fight Bohachuk, but his health didn’t allow it.”

Hearn also praised Turki Alalshikh’s decisive action in selecting Davis as a replacement, highlighting the fighter’s potential and willingness to rise to the occasion.

The Usyk vs. Fury Card Remains Stacked

Despite the last-minute adjustment, the card for Usyk vs. Fury II remains one of the year’s most exciting boxing events. The main event, a rematch of their thrilling May encounter where Usyk narrowly edged Fury by split decision, will determine the undisputed heavyweight king.

The addition of Ishmael Davis to the co-main event ensures the undercard retains its intrigue, setting the stage for an unforgettable night of boxing. Fans can expect Davis to seize this golden opportunity as he faces the challenge of Bohachuk under the bright lights in Riyadh.
