Clinton Stars in Stunning 5-1 Rout of Spurs

Manchester City Women put on a standout performance at Brisbane Road, defeating Tottenham Hotspur 5-1 in a game that showcased their squad depth and attacking potential.  The night was especially memorable for Grace Clinton, who made her City debut, scoring and assisting in a match that demonstrated why City looks like a title contender this season.

Early Domination Sets the Tone

Spurs entered the game unbeaten in the WSL and with a clean sheet, determined to defend their form.  However, the city appeared to be dangerous from the start.  Aoba Fujino and Khadija “Bunny” Shaw combined for a slick one-two just outside Spurs’ box, and they opened the scoring after only 23 minutes.  Fujino slotted home smartly, giving City the advantage.

Momentum shifted in City’s favor before halftime.  Vivianne Miedema headed in from a corner, and three minutes later, Kerstin Casparij converted a loose effort via a deflection to make it 3-0.  Spurs appeared shocked.

Clinton’s Big Night

The match’s subplot was Grace Clinton’s debut after joining from Manchester United in a swap deal with Jess Park.  She came off the bench around the 65th minute.  Soon after, she made an impression.  Clinton calmly tucked in City’s fourth goal in the 80th minute after Kerolin’s pullback.  It was her first contribution to her new club.

And she did not stop there.  Deep into stoppage time, Clinton was involved again, this time assisting Laura Coombs, who sealed the 5-1 win.  Not bad for a debut, especially in front of a boisterous away crowd.

Spurs Fight Back Late, But Too Little Too Late

Tottenham showed signs of resilience, especially in the second half.  Their substitute Olivia Holdt smashed in what many are calling the goal of the game—a 30-yard thunderbolt in the 87th minute—giving Spurs something to cheer about.  However, City had already caused damage.

Spurs had their moments—some solid defending, some spirited counterattacks—but City’s pace, movement, and attacking sharpness ultimately proved too much.  As City relaxed slightly in the final minutes, Coombs’ goal in stoppage time served as a reminder of City’s class, even though the game was already decided.

What It Means for Both Teams

For Manchester City, this was a demonstration of depth and adaptability.  They were without Lauren Hemp for much of the match due to injury, but others stepped up—Fujino, Miedema, and Casparij all demonstrated their attacking threat, and Clinton’s debut adds another weapon going forward.  City are now near the top of the WSL table, and performances like tonight boost confidence ahead of tougher matches.

The loss ends the Spurs’ perfect defensive record this season.  It’s a setback, but it could also be an opportunity to reevaluate.  There were some positives, particularly Holdt’s goal and some defensive moments under pressure, but there was a noticeable lack of composure and cutting edge in attack.  They must address this if they are to remain competitive in a demanding WSL.

Looking Ahead

City will hope Grace Clinton’s momentum carries forward. Keeping this kind of attacking flair, even in games they are expected to win, will make a difference in tight fixtures down the season. Tottenham, meanwhile, must bounce back quickly—WSL waits for no team.
