Collazo Retains Titles After Surprise Stoppage of Vayson

Oscar Collazo successfully defended his unified WBA and WBO minimumweight world titles with a surprise stoppage of Jayson Vayson in Round 7.  The fight took place on Saturday, September 20, 2025, at the Fantasy Springs Casino in Indio, California, and was live streamed via DAZN.

What Happened

From the bell, Collazo (13-0, 10 KOs) showed why he’s considered one of the top minimumweight fighters in the game.  Early in Round 1, he caught Vayson with a sharp check right-hook that knocked the Filipino down.  It wasn’t a significant injury, but it demonstrated Collazo’s accuracy and timing.

Vayson (14-2-1, 8 KOs) did not back down.  In Rounds 2–4, he came out aggressive, landing body shots and mixing up his offense.  In particular, Round 4 saw him deal some damage downstairs, forcing Collazo to adjust.

However, Collazo’s experience and pressure started to show.  He shifted momentum in the later rounds, particularly Round 6, with clean punches and consistent pressure.  Vayson’s output was slightly reduced as a result of the consistent attack.

Then came Round 7, and with 1:41 on the clock, Vayson’s corner unexpectedly called it quits.  Though Vayson was still fighting and arguably competitive, his team appears to have concluded that he was either taking too much or was sufficiently injured to make continuing dangerous.  With input from Vayson’s corner, the referee stopped the fight, awarding Collazo the TKO victory.

The Reaction & The Controversy

Many onlookers were caught off guard by the corner’s decision.  While boxing corners are responsible for protecting their fighters, it is always controversial when a stoppage occurs while the boxer is still active and appears to be willing to continue.  Some commentators felt Vayson could have at least waited out the seventh round, noting that he was working and demonstrating resilience.

Collazo, for his part, stated that he thought the stoppage was justified.  He stated that he noticed Vayson’s energy level dropping, that he was breaking him down, and that he shot well in the later rounds.  He stressed that safety comes first.

Vayson, though disappointed, was respectful of his corner’s decision. He said he felt “the punches in my body,” but also said he thought he could have carried on. Still, he did not dispute the decision.

What This Means for Collazo & the Division

With this victory, Collazo retains both his WBA and WBO minimumweight championships.  He’s now 13-0 with ten knockouts, an impressive record, especially at the lower weights where speed and volume frequently outperform one-punch power.

Collazo appears to be prepared for more difficult challenges in the future.  Observers see potential for undisputed title opportunities at 105 pounds, as well as moving up to challenge champions in adjacent lower weight classes, such as Ricardo Sandoval, who has recently gained recognition in Japan.  There are rumors that Collazo may seek to become undisputed in the division.

This was Jayson Vayson’s first world title fight.  He showed signs of promise, particularly in the middle of the fight, but may have lacked the body conditioning or ability to fully withstand Collazo’s pressure over the championship rounds.  This experience, while ultimately disappointing, may sharpen him for future title runs.

Final Thoughts

Oscar Collazo’s victory was decisive, but the way it ended raised some questions.  Stoppages in boxing are always contentious, especially when a corner abandons the fight.  Still, safety is paramount, and in this case, many believe the corner made the correct decision.

Collazo demonstrated once again that he possesses the skills, composure, and physicality to dominate the minimumweight division.  As he settles into his roles as unified champion, he appears hungry for more — possibly undisputed gold next.

As for the fans, this fight provided action, drama, and a night in which the champion justified his status.  Though the outcome was not what Vayson had hoped for, his stock is likely to rise as a result of demonstrating toughness and potential.
