The Indianapolis Colts announced on Saturday that defensive lineman Tyquan Lewis has been activated from injured reserve, a move that comes just in time for Sunday’s home game against the Detroit Lions. However, Lewis remains officially listed as questionable for the matchup.
To make room for Lewis on the 53-man roster, the Colts waived fellow defensive lineman Genard Avery. Additionally, the team elevated offensive guard Atonio Mafi from the practice squad for Sunday’s game.
Lewis’ Comeback from Injury
Lewis, who has been sidelined due to an elbow injury, was designated to return from injured reserve earlier this week. Under NFL rules, this designation initiated a 21-day practice window during which he could either be added to the active roster or remain on IR for the remainder of the season. Fortunately for the Colts, Lewis didn’t need the full three weeks and appears ready for action much sooner.
Before his injury, Lewis had started in four games this season, recording 17 tackles (10 solo), 1.5 sacks, two tackles for loss, and three quarterback hits. A versatile presence on the Colts’ defensive line, Lewis was thrust into a starting role earlier this season due to Samson Ebukam’s Achilles injury. Traditionally, he has served as a valuable rotational player capable of lining up both on the edge as a defensive end and inside as a defensive tackle.

Impact of Lewis’ Return
Though Lewis may initially see limited snaps as he works back into game shape, his return provides a significant boost to the Colts’ defensive front. His ability to play multiple positions effectively adds depth and flexibility to a unit that has dealt with its share of injuries this season.
Given his track record and experience, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Lewis reclaim a starting role in the near future as he regains full fitness. His presence could be pivotal as the Colts look to maintain defensive consistency and push for a strong finish to the season.
Roster Moves Ahead of Sunday
In addition to activating Lewis, the Colts made a few strategic roster changes. Defensive lineman Genard Avery was waived in a corresponding move, and offensive guard Atonio Mafi was elevated from the practice squad to add depth along the offensive line.
With a critical matchup against the Lions on the horizon, Lewis’ return is a welcome development for Indianapolis. While his workload may be managed this weekend, his presence could make a meaningful impact as the Colts aim to solidify their playoff aspirations.
