Shock at ONE 169: Muay Thai Icon Rodtang Stripped of Title After Missing Weight

ONE Championship’s ONE 169 event faced a few setbacks leading up to fight night, and another emerged during Thursday’s official weigh-ins.

Already dealing with the cancellation of the featherweight Muay Thai title fight between Tawanchai and Jo Nattawat due to injury, ONE announced on Thursday that Muay Thai superstar Rodtang had missed weight. This forced the promotion to strip Rodtang of his ONE bantamweight Muay Thai title. Despite the weight issue, Rodtang’s opponent, U.K. fighter Jacob Smith, who successfully made weight, remains eligible to claim the title. However, the bout will now take place at a 135.5-pound catchweight.

Rodtang, one of ONE’s biggest Muay Thai stars, gained widespread attention after his mixed-rules bout with Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson in 2022. Although Rodtang impressed with his striking, Johnson ultimately won by submission in the second round.

ONE 169 will stream live on Amazon Prime Video on Friday, November 8, 2024. The event’s main event features a heavyweight MMA title clash between Anatoly Malykhin, who holds three belts, and the massive Senegalese powerhouse “Reug Reug,” Ourmar Kane.

Additional highlights include former bantamweight champion Adriano Moraes, who faces Danny Kingad in his first fight since completing his trilogy with Johnson. Grappling sensation Kade Ruotolo will also step into the MMA cage for the second time to square off against Ahmed Mujtaba.
