Oilers Return to Stanley Cup Final After Dominant Game 5 Victory Over Stars

After defeating the Dallas Stars 6–3 in Game 5 of the Western Conference Final, the Edmonton Oilers are returning to the Stanley Cup Final for the second year in a row. In addition to guaranteeing their spot in the championship series, this triumph paved the way for their much awaited rematch with the Florida Panthers, who defeated them in a thrilling seven-game series the previous season.

Early Offensive Surge Sets the Tone

In Game 5, the Oilers quickly established their supremacy by scoring three goals in the opening eight minutes and seven seconds of play. With a goal and an assist, Connor McDavid spearheaded the drive and achieved his 100th career postseason assist in just 90 games, second only to Wayne Gretzky. The team’s depth and offensive ability were demonstrated by additional goals from Corey Perry, Mattias Janmark, Jeff Skinner, Evander Kane, and Kasperi Kapanen. With 14 stops, goalie Stuart Skinner helped to effectively stifle the Stars’ attempts to rally.

Controversial Coaching Decisions for the Stars

After giving up two goals early in the game, Dallas Stars head coach Peter DeBoer was criticized for benching starting goalie Jake Oettinger just seven minutes into the match. Despite being brought in, backup goalkeeper Casey DeSmith, who hadn’t played since April 26, was unable to change the outcome. Many, including ESPN experts, thought the decision was extreme and questioned DeBoer’s leadership. Despite Oettinger’s poor series performance, the Stars lost 6–3 and were eliminated as a result of the decision, which did not inspire a comeback.

Emotional Moments Highlight Team Unity

The Oilers showed a great feeling of unity outside of their on-ice performance. A heartwarming video that went viral showed Leon Draisaitl’s heartfelt phone conversation with injured teammate Zach Hyman after Game 5, in which he offered his love and support. As they move on to the finals, this show of solidarity has come to represent the team’s oneness.

Breaking Superstitions and Embracing Confidence

During the trophy presentation, Connor McDavid made a significant break from convention by touching the Clarence S. Campbell Bowl, a move that is frequently avoided because of superstitions that it will harm the team’s chances of winning the Stanley Cup Final. Fans overwhelmingly backed McDavid’s choice, which represents a self-assured and resolute attitude as the Oilers get ready for the championship series.

A Rematch with the Florida Panthers

The Oilers will play the Florida Panthers in the Stanley Cup Final for the second consecutive year. The Oilers overcame a 3-0 hole to defeat the Panthers in a thrilling seven-game series last season. Florida won both of its regular-season games against Edmonton this season. The Oilers defeated the Kings, Golden Knights, and Stars, while the Panthers defeated the Lightning, Maple Leafs, and Hurricanes to get to the Finals.

Looking Ahead

Rogers Place in Edmonton will host Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final on Wednesday night. The series promises intense action and gripping plots as the Oilers look for atonement and try to end Canada’s Stanley Cup drought. Fans may expect an exciting finish to the 2025 NHL season because both teams have strong lineups and a track record of close games.
