For the first time since the NBA Cup’s inception, the Los Angeles Lakers have tasted defeat, falling to the Phoenix Suns in a disappointing 127-100 blowout on Tuesday night. The loss marks the Lakers’ first NBA Cup stumble after nearly two full seasons of dominance in the competition.
A Tale of Two Halves
Much like their recent performance against the Denver Nuggets, the Lakers came out strong in the first half but crumbled in the third quarter. After keeping the game close in the opening 24 minutes, Los Angeles was outscored 36-18 in the third period, allowing the Suns to take firm control.
Anthony Davis was once again a bright spot for the Lakers, delivering a dominant stat line of 25 points, 15 rebounds, five assists, a steal, and four blocks. LeBron James flirted with a triple-double, contributing 18 points, 10 assists, and eight rebounds, while Austin Reaves added 15 points on 6-12 shooting. D’Angelo Russell chipped in with 16 points off the bench.
Despite the efforts of their stars, the Lakers were unable to keep pace with a red-hot Suns team that featured standout performances from Kevin Durant, Devin Booker, and a returning Bradley Beal.
A Fiery First Half
The game started with both teams trading baskets in a high-energy opening quarter. Anthony Davis was perfect from the field early, showcasing his midrange touch and throwing down a powerful dunk. LeBron James orchestrated the offense, finding Rui Hachimura for an emphatic slam.
However, Phoenix’s trio of Beal, Booker, and Durant found their rhythm, with Beal knocking down two wide-open 3-pointers and Booker heating up with consecutive midrange buckets. By the end of the first quarter, the Suns led 31-25.

The second quarter saw the Lakers tighten the gap, thanks in large part to an 8-0 solo run by Austin Reaves. Davis continued to anchor the team offensively, and an and-1 bucket briefly gave Los Angeles the lead. Despite their struggles defending the perimeter, the Lakers stayed within striking distance, trailing by just two points at halftime, 56-54.
The Collapse
The third quarter proved disastrous for Los Angeles. While Reaves hit a three to open the half, the Suns’ Jusuf Nurkić came alive, scoring 10 points in the period. Phoenix capitalized on the Lakers’ lack of energy and defensive lapses, going on a 19-4 run to take a commanding 20-point lead.
Kevin Durant was unstoppable, hitting from beyond the arc and dominating in transition. The Lakers, meanwhile, hoisted ill-advised 3-pointers and failed to recover defensively, forcing head coach JJ Redick to pull the starters early in preparation for the second game of a back-to-back.
What Went Wrong?
The Lakers’ reliance on Anthony Davis and LeBron James was glaringly obvious. While both stars delivered strong individual performances, the lack of consistent contributions from the supporting cast doomed the team. Defensive lapses, poor shot selection, and a lack of energy in the second half sealed their fate.
With Jarred Vanderbilt still sidelined due to injury, the Lakers desperately need someone to step up on the defensive end. Time and time again, the team has fallen into the habit of committing turnovers, jacking up ill-advised threes, and letting opponents dictate the pace. This trend must be addressed if they hope to bounce back.
What’s Next?
The Lakers won’t have much time to dwell on this loss, as they face the San Antonio Spurs on Wednesday at 5:00 PM PT. With the team in need of a spark, the question remains: who will step up and take on the challenge?
For now, one thing is clear: the Lakers need a team effort to regain their footing. Reliance on two stars won’t cut it in a league as competitive as this. It’s time for the purple and gold to wake up.
Stay tuned for updates as the Lakers look to bounce back and find their defensive identity in what’s shaping up to be a pivotal stretch of the season.
