JJ Redick SHOCKS Fans by BENCHING D’Angelo Russell for ‘Lack of COMPETE’ in Lakers’ Loss

The Los Angeles Lakers were without Anthony Davis for their game against the Memphis Grizzlies, which meant players like D’Angelo Russell needed to step up.

Unfortunately, Russell continued his struggles in the 2024-25 season, shooting just 4-of-12 for 12 points in the Lakers’ 131-114 loss. Russell’s performance was disappointing, as he appeared disengaged during the game. After a couple of tough possessions in the third quarter, Lakers head coach JJ Redick benched Russell in favor of Gabe Vincent for the remainder of the game.

When asked about Russell’s limited playing time, Redick explained, “Just level of compete. Attention to detail. Some of the things we’ve talked with him about for a couple of weeks.” He added that Russell has shown improvement at times but has also fallen back into old habits. Redick emphasized that the decision wasn’t a punishment, but rather a strategy to give the Lakers the best chance to win.

He praised Vincent’s defensive play in the first half and noted the importance of creating momentum, especially after missed open shots. While it’s still early in the season, the Lakers can’t afford to overlook any games in the highly competitive Western Conference. Redick’s message to Russell is clear: improve your effort and attention to detail. The Lakers will be hoping Russell responds positively when they host the Philadelphia 76ers on Friday.
