Indiana Pacers Defeats Top-Seeded Cleveland Cavaliers in Game 1

In Game 1 of the Eastern Conference playoffs, the Indiana Pacers defeated the Cleveland Cavaliers, who were ranked at the top, 121–112 on the road.

In addition to giving the Pacers a 1-0 series lead, this win highlights their ability to pose a threat to the Eastern Conference’s top team.

Pacers’ Offensive Mastery

Indiana’s attack, especially from beyond the arc, was playing at its peak. The team made 19 of 36 three-point tries, enough for an outstanding 53% three-point shooting percentage. Leading the charge was Andrew Nembhard, who scored a playoff-high 23 points, including 5 of 6 from beyond the arc.

Tyrese Haliburton skillfully directed the attack and finished with 22 points, 13 assists, and three blocks. Myles Turner had a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds, and Pascal Siakam and Aaron Nesmith each contributed 17 points.

Cavaliers’ Struggles Without Garland

Due to injuries, All-Star guard Darius Garland was unable to play, and the Cavaliers felt his absence. Donovan Mitchell took over with 33 points, setting a new NBA record for his ninth straight 30-point effort in series openers.

Mitchell, however, had trouble shooting long range; he only made one out of eleven three-point attempts. Ty Jerome scored 21 points off the bench, and Evan Mobley contributed 20 points and 10 rebounds. Cleveland only made 24% of their three-point tries, which was poor overall despite these efforts.

Game Flow and Turning Points

After Cleveland briefly took the lead in the third quarter, Indiana was able to reclaim control thanks to their effective offense and timely defense. Haliburton’s game-winning three-pointer with 6:21 left in the game was a turning point that gave the Pacers a lead they held until the final buzzer.

The Cavaliers looked weary and had trouble finding their flow after sweeping the Miami Heat in the first round and taking a six-day break.

Looking Ahead

Game 2 of the series will take place in Cleveland on Tuesday. To prevent getting further behind in the series, the Cavaliers will need to improve, especially in their perimeter defense and three-point shooting.

Encouraged by their performance in Game 1, the Pacers will want to build on their momentum and establish a decisive lead before the series moves to Indiana.
