Giants QB Tommy DeVito Nursing Sore Throwing Arm After Buccaneers Loss

The New York Giants are facing a potential quarterback dilemma as they prepare for Thursday’s game against the Dallas Cowboys. Starting quarterback Tommy DeVito, who made his first start of the season last week, is nursing a sore throwing arm, casting doubt on his availability for the divisional clash.

Although DeVito was not listed on Monday’s injury report, head coach Brian Daboll revealed that the soreness in DeVito’s right arm came to light just before Tuesday’s walkthrough practice. Daboll expressed hope that DeVito would be ready to play but acknowledged the team was taking precautions by giving backup quarterback Drew Lock additional reps in practice.

“If Tommy is good, then Tommy will be the guy,” Daboll stated, emphasizing the team’s preference for continuity under center.

DeVito’s Condition in Focus

After Tuesday’s practice, DeVito admitted to feeling soreness not just in his arm but throughout his body, including his neck, following Sunday’s game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Despite the discomfort, the 25-year-old quarterback remains optimistic about playing on Thursday.

“The plan is to play,” DeVito said. “We’ll see how I feel tomorrow. Hopefully, I’ll wake up feeling a little bit better after getting more treatment today. Looking forward to tomorrow.”

DeVito stepped into the starting role last week after Daboll benched former starter Daniel Jones following a string of five consecutive losses. In Sunday’s 30-7 defeat to the Buccaneers, DeVito showed flashes of promise, completing 21 of 31 passes for 189 yards. However, he also endured four sacks and briefly left the game in the fourth quarter after taking a hard hit.

Drew Lock Prepares for Potential Action

With DeVito’s status uncertain, backup quarterback Drew Lock is staying ready. Lock briefly entered Sunday’s game in the fourth quarter after DeVito’s injury but is preparing for a larger role if needed.

“Always got to be ready,” Lock said. “No matter what the week, no matter what the situation is, just playing like you’re going to go in there and play. My mindset didn’t change this week, and we’ll see how the rest of the week shakes out.”

The Bigger Picture

The Giants, sitting at 2-9, are looking for any spark to salvage their season. DeVito’s performance has been a bright spot despite the team’s struggles, but his potential absence could complicate their game plan against the 4-7 Cowboys.

Both teams are heading into Thursday’s matchup with something to prove, and the Giants’ quarterback situation will be a key storyline to watch as the week unfolds. For now, all eyes are on DeVito’s recovery and Lock’s readiness to step up if called upon.
