Donovan Mitchell, the great guard for the Cleveland Cavaliers, has made NBA history by breaking Michael Jordan’s record for consecutive 30-point games in the first game of a playoff series. This is a stunning demonstration of his consistency and scoring ability.

With 33 points in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference semifinals against the Indiana Pacers, Mitchell reached this milestone. He set a new NBA record with this performance, his eighth consecutive playoff opener with at least 30 points.

A Historic Streak

Mitchell’s run has lasted across several postseason campaigns without interruption since it started in the 2020 playoffs. In addition to displaying incredible consistency, he broke the previous record set by Michael Jordan, who had seven such games, by scoring 30 points or more in eight straight Game 1s.

This accomplishment puts Mitchell in an exclusive group and demonstrates his capacity to do his best work when it counts most.

Game 1 Performance Against the Pacers

Mitchell scored 33 points, more than any other player in the Pacers series opener. In spite of his best efforts, the Cavaliers lost 121–112.

Mitchell only made one of his eleven three-point attempts, displaying unusually poor outside shooting. His leadership and overall scoring, however, kept the Cavaliers competitive the entire time.

Mitchell’s Playoff Legacy

Mitchell has contributed significantly to the Cavaliers’ success since joining the team in 2022. His postseason performances have been especially impressive, including several high-scoring playoff games and a franchise-record 71-point performance during the regular season.

His reputation as one of the league’s top scorers is further cemented by his ability to improve throughout the postseason.  

Looking Ahead

Mitchell’s scoring and leadership will be essential as the Cavaliers get ready for Game 2 in an effort to even the series against the Pacers. Even while individual honors are important, Mitchell is still more concerned with the success of the team and moving on in the playoffs.
