Bruno Fernandes Returns Early to Manchester United Following Portugal Release

Manchester United star Bruno Fernandes has been granted an early return to his club after being released from international duty with Portugal. Despite Portugal having one more UEFA Nations League fixture remaining against Croatia, Fernandes, along with Bernardo Silva, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Pedro Neto, has been excused by head coach Roberto Martínez.

The decision comes after Portugal secured their place atop League A, Group 1, ensuring qualification for the semi-finals with a match to spare.

Fernandes played the full 90 minutes and scored in Portugal’s dominant 5-1 victory over Poland on Friday. That result, combined with Croatia’s loss to Scotland, cemented Portugal’s top spot in the group.

Fernandes would have missed the Croatia match regardless due to suspension after picking up his third yellow card of the tournament against Poland. Roberto Martínez used the opportunity to make adjustments to his squad, including calling up Under-21 players Fábio Silva and Geovany Quenda.

“In the first stage, we made six changes from one game to the next,” Martínez explained in his pre-match press conference. “It’s important for us to be first – and we already are.

The game against Croatia is important, but we need to look at other players. We’re going to let go of Bernardo Silva, Pedro Neto, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Bruno Fernandes, who is suspended.”

Fernandes’ early release provides Manchester United’s new head coach, Rúben Amorim, an opportunity to meet and work with his star midfielder ahead of the club’s next Premier League fixture. Amorim, who was appointed earlier this month, has just begun familiarizing himself with his new role after obtaining his work visa.

The Portuguese coach is expected to be in charge of United’s match against Ipswich following the international break. Fernandes has already spoken highly of Amorim, expressing admiration for the way the former Sporting CP manager connects with his players.

“Obviously, for me, what stands out is the connection he has with the players,” Fernandes told club media. “You see it at the end of the game when a manager leaves mid-season, and with all they have still to win, the way the players say goodbye to him shows the respect they have. It’s clear he’s a great character and gives his all to the team.”

With Fernandes returning early and United looking to bounce back from an inconsistent start to the season, the additional time under Amorim’s guidance could be crucial in preparing for the weeks ahead.
