Auston Matthews on Pursuing Alex Ovechkin’s Goal Record: ‘Such a Long Way to Go’

Auston Matthews, the great center for the Toronto Maple Leafs, has lately responded to questions about whether he could break Alex Ovechkin’s NHL goal record.

Matthews said, “I have such a long way to go,” acknowledging the significance of such an accomplishment.

Current Standing and Projections

With 398 goals in 623 career games as of April 8, 2025, Matthews is 497 goals short of Ovechkin’s record of 895 goals. If Matthews continues at his current goals-per-game rate, he would need to play about 778 more games to reach 896 goals, which is one more than Ovechkin’s current total.

This would take him roughly nine and a half more seasons, assuming an 82-win season.

Challenges Ahead

A number of things, including Matthews’ consistency and general health, will determine whether or not this milestone is reached. Interestingly, only once in his career—during his debut season in 2016–17—has he finished an entire 82-game season.

Any time lost because of injury would increase the amount of time needed to break Ovechkin’s record.

Respect for Ovechkin’s Achievements

Matthews has voiced his admiration for Ovechkin’s achievements, emphasizing how important it is to see such a historic endeavor. He remarked, “It’s cool. He’s obviously who he is and what he’s done for the game and what he’s accomplished.”

Conclusion

Although hockey fans are interested in the possibility of Auston Matthews breaking Alex Ovechkin’s goal aggregate, Matthews himself is realistic and aware of the significant task that lies ahead.

Throughout his career, he is committed to delivering his best work and helping his team succeed.
