Jake Paul claimed a unanimous decision victory over boxing legend Mike Tyson in an exhibition match on Friday night. While Paul dominated the bout, criticism has mounted over his decision to face the 58-year-old former heavyweight champion instead of taking on active professional boxers.
Fan Backlash Against Paul
Paul, who transitioned from YouTube to boxing, has faced scrutiny for his choice of opponents. Most of his bouts have been against retired MMA fighters or, as in Tyson’s case, older boxers long past their prime. Paul’s only fight against a full-time, active boxer came last year when he lost to Tommy Fury by split decision.
After Friday’s fight, fans took to social media to voice their dissatisfaction.
“Jake Paul couldn’t stop a 60-year-old grandpa with busted knees who literally couldn’t move,” one fan wrote on X (formerly Twitter). “This isn’t a win; it’s an embarrassment. Let’s put an end to this ‘boxer’ gimmick.”
Others echoed similar sentiments, calling on Paul to face opponents in their prime.
“Tyson is a legend, but he’s old. Jake Paul needs to fight someone his own age,” another fan posted.
Former NBA star Magic Johnson also criticized the event, calling it “sad.”
“I cut it off because I couldn’t watch anymore,” Johnson wrote on X. “It’s sad to see Mike Tyson like this. This fight tonight was not great for boxing.”

Paul’s Response and Financial Success
Despite the criticism, Paul defended his career trajectory and hinted at the financial rewards of the fight. At an August press conference, the 27-year-old suggested he would earn an eight-figure payday for the exhibition.
“I’m here to make $40 million and knock out a legend,” Paul told reporters at the time.
Pre-Fight Scrutiny
Even before the fight, Paul faced tough questions about his choice of opponents. At a pre-fight press conference, Dallas journalist Jacob Detamore questioned when Paul would face legitimate contenders in his weight class.
“You’ve said in the past that you want to be taken seriously as a boxer,” Detamore noted. “So when can we expect you to face legitimate contenders?”
Paul brushed off the question, dismissing Detamore as “the same guy” who had raised similar concerns previously.
What’s Next for Jake Paul?
After the fight, Paul was asked who his next opponent might be.
“Anyone I want,” Paul said. “Everyone is next on the list.”
While his victory over Tyson has drawn attention, critics continue to challenge Paul to face tougher competition if he wants to solidify his standing in the sport.
