Pittsburgh Pirates Sign World Series Champion Andrew Heaney

In an effort to strengthen their pitching staff, the Pittsburgh Pirates have agreed to a one-year deal valued at $5.25 million for the 2025 season with left-handed pitcher Andrew Heaney.

Heaney, an experienced veteran who won the World Series in 2023 with the Texas Rangers, adds significant talent and expertise to the Pirates’ lineup.

Heaney’s Career Highlights

Andrew Heaney, 33 years old, has proven to be a dependable starter throughout his 11-year career in Major League Baseball.

He is notably one of only four left-handed pitchers who have achieved over 150 strikeouts in both of the last two seasons, alongside Yusei Kikuchi, Framber Valdez, and MacKenzie Gore.

During the 2024 season with the Rangers, Heaney recorded a 4.28 ERA over 160 innings, representing his highest workload since 2018. His changeup was especially effective, yielding a run value of +4 and placing him in the 86th percentile for offspeed pitches.

Impact on the Pirates’ Rotation

The inclusion of Heaney is set to enhance and fortify the Pirates’ pitching lineup. General Manager Ben Cherington shared his excitement over the acquisition, saying, “We think his history and pitching approach align well with our team.”

Heaney’s experience is anticipated to offer consistency and guidance in a rotation featuring the reigning National League Rookie of the Year, Paul Skenes.

Corresponding Roster Moves

To make room for Heaney on the 40-man roster, the Pirates have designated right-handed pitcher Brett de Geus for assignment. Furthermore, they have released right-hander Yerry Rodríguez, who is said to be facing an elbow injury.

These decisions demonstrate the organization’s dedication to refining their pitching staff in preparation for the upcoming season.

Looking Ahead

As Spring Training unfolds, Heaney will become part of the Pirates’ organization, contributing his knowledge and competitive drive on the field. His presence not only boosts the team’s short-term potential but also acts as a calculated investment in the growth of the Pirates’ pitching staff.

Supporters and analysts will be paying close attention to how Heaney’s experience and abilities affect the Pirates’ success in the 2025 season.
