In an unexpected development, Oleksandr Usyk, a Ukrainian boxer who is a devoted Orthodox Christian, has been barred from carrying out a crucial pre-fight ritual during his eagerly awaited rematch against Tyson Fury on Saturday night in Riyadh.
During their first fight earlier this year, Usyk was spotted kissing a religious cross in the corner in between rounds; the crucifix is said to have been a gift from Greek monks and serves as a major source of inspiration and strength for the Ukrainian fighter.
However, boxing officials decided at a rules conference on Friday that Usyk will not be permitted to kiss the cross in this rematch. “If anything other than water is used that goes to the fighter’s lips, the inspector will take it away, test it if needed, and ensure fairness,” Fury’s promoter, Frank Warren, told Sky Sports in an explanation of the ruling.
Usyk Responds to the Ban
Addressing the decision, Usyk reflected on his faith and the significance of the crucifix:
“This cross was a present from the chief monk in one of the Greek monasteries. It gives me strength and leads me to victory. I see myself as a sinner, and I need help to overcome my sins. My main sin in the last fight? Hitting him in the face.”
Despite the restriction, Usyk remains focused and determined for the upcoming bout.
Beard Debate and Low-Blow Clarifications
Other areas of disagreement between the boxers were also discussed at the rules meeting. Fury was asked to cut his beard by Usyk’s camp, but the Gypsy King was allowed to keep it. Frank Warren used past boxing precedents to support Fury’s right to keep his beard.
Additionally, following the controversy surrounding Usyk’s fight with Daniel Dubois last year, both sides sought clarification on low blows. To ensure that there is no misunderstanding during this rematch, officials have now made it plain that “anything below the navel is a low blow.”
A Heated Rematch Awaits
Oleksandr Usyk and Tyson Fury’s rematch is expected to be just as exciting and controversial as their first encounter since temperatures are high and both sides are bringing up important points. Although Usyk prevailed by split decision in the last fight, Fury will be attempting to regain control in what is sure to be a must-see spectacle.
The impact of these regulation changes on the fight and if Usyk can use his faith to win another fight will be eagerly watched by fans.
