Haaland Hat-Trick Leads Norway Closer to World Cup Return

In a memorable night for Norway and Erling Haaland, the national team roared back into World Cup qualification contention with a 5-0 victory over Israel.  The star striker scored a clinical hat-trick, cementing his place among football’s elite and propelling Norway closer to a spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

A Rocky Start, But Haaland Was Unfazed

Surprisingly, Haaland’s evening started with two missed penalties.  Israel’s goalkeeper Daniel Peretz denied him on both occasions, first with a low save and then again after a retake was granted due to encroachment.   Rather than being rattled by his missed shots, Haaland regrouped and turned the night into a masterclass in finishing.

He scored his first goal late in the first half, taking a pass from Alexander Sørloth and slotting it home.  The second came shortly after halftime, and the third ended the night, capping off a dominant performance in front of the home crowd at Ullevaal Stadium.

Norway Besiege Israel, Own Goals Add to the Damage

Israel’s defense, which was under heavy siege from the start, contributed to its own demise.  Two own goals, one by Anan Khalaili and the other by Idan Nachmias, helped widen Norway’s lead.

These unfortunate events worsened Israel’s troubles, making it difficult for them to regain composure.  Haaland’s goals were the result of precision and perseverance, but Norway’s own goals emphasized its pressure and dominance throughout.

Qualification Now in Clear View

With this victory, Norway now leads Group I with six wins in six matches and a remarkable +26 goal difference, narrowing the gap to automatic qualification.

Their remaining fixtures include home games against Estonia and a crucial away match against Italy, who trail Norway in the standings.  Norway could qualify for the World Cup for the first time since 1998 with a win or two in those matches.

Coaches Ståle Solbakken and Haaland emphasized the importance of maintaining focus despite excitement.  Solbakken stated, “We are getting close, but we must remain composed and take it match by match.”

Haaland’s Form & Milestones

Haaland’s performance tonight was significant in addition to the three goals he scored.  He scored 50 goals in 46 international appearances, becoming one of the fastest in European history.

However, fans and commentators pointed out that the missed penalties served as a reminder that even a goal-scoring machine can have off nights.  Even so, his ability to fully recover and shine under pressure demonstrated his mental strength.

In addition, Haaland’s goal total for the calendar year has continued to rise.  With club and country combined, he has now scored 20 goals in just a dozen matches, demonstrating his consistency and insatiable desire to score.

What This Means for Norway & Beyond

This result not only puts Norway in first place for qualification, but it also sends a message across Europe: Norway is back.  Their group form has been excellent, and with Haaland firing on all cylinders, few would bet against them making the final.

Italy and other chasers now have a smaller margin for error.  Norway now has the upper hand and will be favored in their remaining games.  For Israel, the defeat effectively ends their qualification hopes.

If Norway makes it to the 2026 World Cup, they’ll be full of confidence and momentum, led by a striker at the peak of his powers.  Fans will remember tonight’s performance as one of the nights when a team’s dreams became more tangible.
